Xue Chang didn’t know how long it had taken him to wake up, but his body was sore, his head was swollen and aching, and even his eyelids were heavy.
He struggled to open his eyes, and the first thing he saw was an old roof, old wooden beams, cobwebs covering them, and even a hole the size of a washbasin through which a grey light shone, making the room less dim.
After looking around, Xue Chang tried to fall back asleep as he had just woken up. But he was suddenly jolted awake, ‘Didn’t I get hit by a bus?! I didn’t die?! Then they should have taken me to the hospital! But this doesn’t look like a hospital at all!…’
The more Xue Chang thought about it, the more his head throbbed. Moreover, this kind of pain drove away his drowsiness. After he struggled to sit up, he began inspecting his body: His limbs remained intact, with no visible wounds, and despite feeling weak, both arms and legs remained unharmed. It was a great relief that his body had not sustained significant damage after such a considerable impact.
Without even having time to rejoice, Xue Chang was plunged into fear as he noticed he was wearing an extremely tattered and strange robe, with thick grease and dust accumulating on the rough fabric, giving off an unpleasant smell as if it had not been washed for months. But what frightened him even more was that his hands didn’t look like his own as the palm of his right hand didn’t have the prominent mole he had, and his fingers were much thicker and more calloused, with many large and small scratches on his arm, a marked difference from his hands with relatively delicate skin…
With shaking hands, Xue Chang touched his whole body. Then his heart sank to the ground, ‘This body is obviously not mine!’
He pinched his thigh, and the sharp pain made him realise he wasn’t dreaming.
‘What’s going on here?…who the hell am I?…’ Xue Chang fell into a deep confusion and fear as his eyes wandered around. He was in a relatively spacious place, with the floor covered with thick dust and appeared quite messy. Ahead, a damaged statue sat on a wooden platform, its paint peeling off and its face blurred, creating a somewhat terrifying figure. At the statue’s base lay a rusty incense burner, a clear indication that this place was, without a doubt, a temple.
Xue Change suddenly froze when he turned around and saw a skinny boy, also dressed in ragged clothes and with his hair tied up in an ancient bun, curled up in a ball, and lying on the dusty ground behind him.
Xue Chang was full of doubts, but when he saw the boy smiling and sleeping soundly, he couldn’t bear to wake him immediately. After hesitating for a moment, he simply put his hands on the ground, stood up slowly and, brushing the dust from his hands, slowly walked over to the closed wooden door and struggled to remove the wooden rod that held the door closed.
Then the old door creaked and swung open.
Although he had already prepared mentally, Xue Chang was still surprised.
What unfolded before his eyes were half a man’s height of dense wild grass, countless tall and thick trees, and through the lush foliage, he could vaguely see the just-rising sun. As his eyes scanned the area, he could see the misty mountains, but he couldn’t find the shadow of the modern skyscrapers and heavy traffic.
‘Have I reincarnated?…’ Although China’s Internet hasn’t developed much since the millennium has just passed, online literature has already begun to grow, and some novels about reincarnation and transmigration have started to appear. Xue Chang, who loved reading martial arts novels since childhood, became addicted to the Internet and a fan of online novels because he had so much free time after work. So everything that happened to him couldn’t help but make him suspicious.
Just as he began to get agitated, he heard a low noise from the bushes a short distance ahead. Then, in the hazy morning light, he saw a pair of glowing green eyes in the grass.
Immediately afterwards, he saw a furry back peek out from the grass. Then the grass parted as a quadruped burst out and stood on the narrow path leading to the small temple.
The animal has a long snout, pointed ears, and fluffy, tangled grey and black fur.
‘A wild dog?…’ Xue Chang was taken aback for a moment, but he immediately realised something was wrong since he had owned dogs. Unlike a dog that likes to hold its head high and wag its tail, the animal in front of him had its tail hanging between its hind legs and its head and neck hanging down, looking like a lost dog. But its eyes were unusually sharp, revealing its ferocity, especially when it stared at Xue Chang. It then lowered its body slightly as it took slow steps forward, while its mouth turned up to reveal its sharp fangs as it silently intimidated Xue Chang.
Xue Chang trembled with fear as he couldn’t stop himself from shouting, “Wolf?!”
He unconsciously grabbed the door rod and held it across his chest.
The wolf suddenly stopped moving forward and started at him coldly.
Growing up in a peaceful city, Xue Chang had only seen wolves in zoos and on television since he was a child, so they looked nothing powerful, far worse than tigers and lions. But when a wolf actually appeared in front of him, even though it didn’t look powerful, the terrifying presence it created frightened Xue Chang to the point that he didn’t even dare to move because he had a premonition the wolf would pounce on him if he did.
After just a moment of confrontation, he broke out in a cold sweat, and the constant pain in his head and muscle weakness had made it almost impossible for him to support his body.
And the wolf seemed to sense his weakness as it approached him cautiously and slowly.
At this critical moment, footsteps sounded behind Xue Chang, “Blockhead, why did you get up so early today? Are you okay now?!”
Xue Chang shouted subconsciously, “Don’t come here; there is a wolf!…cough!…cough! cough!…” As soon as he said two words, he couldn’t stop coughing, causing his whole body to twitch involuntarily.
The wolf suddenly accelerated, and after a few steps, it leapt into the air and charged at Xue Chang, who hadn’t fully recovered. It then opened its mouth, revealing its sharp fangs as it tried to bite Xue Chang’s neck with a ferocious expression.
It was all too late… until a small figure suddenly appeared behind Xue Chang and ran straight into the approaching wolf.
Although this interrupted the wolf’s sudden attack on Xue Chang, it took the opportunity to throw the boy to the ground.
Xue Chang’s eyes widened as he heard the boy scream and saw the wolf bite him as they fell two metres away, causing Xue Chang to roar as a surge of energy rose from his body, making him forget his weakness and charge straight at the wolf while holding the wooden rod.
Although the wolf appeared to be concentrating on biting the boy, it is actually paying attention to Xue Chang, knowing that the taller man was the greatest threat. So when it saw the man charging forward recklessly with his chest wide open, it immediately let go of the boy. It then stomped back hard on all four legs and shot out like an arrow, opening its mouth full of sharp teeth to bite the most vulnerable and lethal part of the human’s body.
Xue Chang had never expected the wolf to be so cunning. A moment ago, the wolf’s head had been down as it bit the boy, but it suddenly lunged at him in the blink of an eye. Xue Chang could see the wolf’s ferocious face, the teeth as sharp as knives, and even smell the stench coming from the wolf’s mouth.
His face turned pale with fear when death was fast approaching, and his brain went blank, but he had no thought of fleeing at that critical moment. Instead, his right hand subconsciously waved the rod… Then the rod struck as fast as lightning and hit the wolf’s head with a bang.
Good quality translation, quite cliche story but quite good story telling. Good stuff. Need more of this.
